Top Gun: Maverick – I watched it!

I was flying high after watching Top Gun: Maverick! This movie has definitely not lost that loving feeling! etc etc etc.

If I could use all the Top Gun references to describe this movie, trust me I would… What a wild, adrenaline-filled, and nostalgic ride!

Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs after more than thirty years as one of the Navy’s top pilots. He’s a test pilot, avoiding rising in the Navy ranks , flying under the radar, as they’d say, but staying in the sky!

As the movie opens Maverick’s operation is closed down and he’s called to train Top Gun graduates for a special mission. Here he’s faced with Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose”. Some might assume Maverick is the reason for Goose’s death and we later find out Maverick also stalled Rooster’s career path at Top Gun… He’s not popular and there’s plenty of tension!

Dog fight/ fighter-pilot action aplenty, with the training, mission and enemy fight scenes all giving us so much action. The competition among the officers is fun enough to watch but a bit thin and of course they all come out as a team, playing for the same side, at the end.

While this movie harks back to the original that we know and love, it’s not a Top Gun remake and doesn’t feel same-same-y.

Overall, I applaud the team from Top Gun: Maverick. They threw back enough, not too much, and turned ’80s nostalgia into a creative, thrilling, and entertaining movie that really reminds us why we “feel the need, the need for speed” and really love the 80s so much. Never mind that you get to sit in the cinema again, what a treat! But can you tell I really enjoyed this movie?
